Khao San Road history

In 1982, Bangkok celebrated its 200th anniversary. On this occasion, the authorities organized a magnificent holiday. Many tourists from all over the world came there and it was hard to find housing in the center of the city. The locals guessed to rent their houses to the tourists, it turned out to be quite a profitable business. Many guest houses, souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes appeared on Khao San Road.

The film The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio, where the main character flies to Thailand in search of new sensations and stops in a cheap guesthouse exactly on Khaosan Road, made this place famous all over the world. Impressed by the film, more and more young travelers from different countries began to come to Bangkok in search of adventures.

There are a lot of different products at low prices: shoes, bags, clothes, souvenirs, hand-made products and household appliances. Thai tailors chose this street and opened their branded workshops here, where they sell exclusive clothes and receive orders for tailoring suits or dresses at reasonable prices.

Night life

With the sunset, the street becomes crowded. Hundreds of neon signs light up, and bars, restaurants, nightclubs open their doors. Music plays loudly all night long and Thai girls dance go-go in night clubs. Most nightclubs start their work after 11 pm and offer free entrance. In some places, the entrance is paid (100-200 THB), but it includes one or two drinks. In addition to nightclubs, there is a wide selection of bars for any taste - sports, games (billiards, pool), with live music or dance programs.

Wat Chana Songkhram

Those who are tired of fast rhythm of Khao San Road can cross the street and visit calm and peaceful Wat Chana Songkhram. The temple existed even in those times when Ayutthaya was the capital of Thailand. The territory of the temple complex is not large, it includes one large temple and several small buildings. Here you can see the old Buddha statue - Phra Phra Buddha Norasee Trilokachet, which was created several centuries ago.
